Random 5 Friday, August 19

1. Today is my parents' Sixtieth Anniversary! I can't imagine being married 60 years. I mean, really; the longest I've made it is about 10-11 years. (Well, cumulative, I guess I've been married about 28 years total).

My parents' "secret?" First, a strong faith in God, and in their vows of "in sickness and in health" and "till death do us part." Second, their motto of "I'd rather fight than switch!"
2. Our new home school year is under way. The first week of this month was spent with the boys assisting at Vacation Bible School. These past two weeks, we have been studying about the Summer Olympics. Besides working on the Summer Olympics unit study, from Unit Studies by Amanda Bennett, we "have" to watch the Olympics. Terrible, I know, right? <grin>

3. The boys are taking some online classes through a virtual school this year. SJ is taking just Creative Photography. DL is taking Creative Photography, and remedial math. We also plan for him to take the Driver's Ed class.

4. I know I've shared some already about the catastrophic flooding in Mississippi and Louisiana. And I shared a picture from out at the transmitter site. Hubby sent me a new picture on Thursday:
5. I'd like to leave you with this video (you may want tissues nearby):
Please continue to pray for the people of Louisiana and Mississippi. As friends and family have checked in, I have learned that one of my brothers-in-law apparently lost everything. The brother of one of my high school classmates had 17 inches of water in his house. Others fared better.

Random 5 on Friday, January 29

1. It's been awhile since I posted a "Random 5 on Friday" post. Hopefully I can get back in to the habit. Here's hoping! <grin>

2. As you may know, Jen had an appendectomy (almost) a couple weeks ago. This past Tuesday she had her post-op appointment. She wanted me to go with her.

She wanted to walk around at the mall before her appointment. While in the mall, we had a rather humorous experience!

One of the kiosks had on display those hair-straightening devices. (For those who may not know, I have straight, waist length hair, for which I often receive compliments).  The young salesman approached us with a coupon, and began his spiel. Usually I just say "no, thanks" and walk away. This time I let him talk us in to his demonstration.

What was amusing was the fact that he was "hitting on" Jen through me! LOL My long hair was his excuse, of course. As he began his demonstration, he asked if Jen was my sister. (Ha!!) So I replied that no, she's my daughter. He made some comment about my pretty eyes, but seemed to be looking at Jen instead. He did ask our names (mine first, then Jen's), and then asked her how old she is.

All the while, he was demonstrating this straightening device. I'll admit, I like the way it made my hair look! But I certainly couldn't afford one.

Another young man in the store through which we entered and exited the mall also sort of "hit" on her. So I asked her if it happens often, when she is out with her friend. Yes, she said. Just always be careful, my dear girl!

Anyway, she checked out just fine at her doctor's appointment. She is healing rapidly! I am thankful to our Lord.

3. Meanwhile, my doctor's appointment (at which I was to hear the results of my ultrasound and blood work) which was scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed! So the suspense lingers...

4. We spent Wednesday afternoon with our friends. We tried learning how to play the game I gave Botanist Boy for his birthday: The Castles of Burgundy. It has very complicated directions! We certainly are thankful for the time we get to spend with our friends here in Florida! (We certainly miss them, terribly, when we are in Mississippi!!)

5. We've been to the library several times this week, so the boys could use the wifi to do their math on their devices. Oh! How we love this library, and the library system here in Florida, compared to the one in Mississippi!!

Random 5 on Friday

1. I had to buy a 50 pound bag of sunflower seed today, for the cardinals. It's been like a cardinal family reunion around here lately. I think there are two or three dozen of them hanging around our yard/feeders. Most of them are juveniles, I think, along with a few females and bright-red males.

2. Speaking of our feeders--we have at least a half dozen squirrels also frequenting our feeder. In fact, they are chewing up the feeder. It's nearly totally destroyed. Grrr! The little buggers!

3. I think our hummingbird numbers are higher now than last week. This weekend is the HummerBird Celebration in Rockport-Fulton, Texas. Oh, how fun it'd be to attend.

Birding Adventures TV Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds - Texas

You can learn about hummingbird migration, and report your hummingbird sightings on Journey North.

 4. Another bird migration we enjoy "following" is the Whooping Crane migration. Sunday, September 20, is the target date to begin their journey south. You can learn more at Journey North, and follow them via Operation Migration.

5. The boys have been spending time in the kitchen this week.

Random 5 on Friday, September 11

1. Today we are remembering the families of those who lost loved ones on 9/11/2001

2. I've been watching the news, and watching the refugees pouring in to Europe really moves my heart.

I am thankful for organizations like Adventist Development and Relief Agency, who have people there, helping physically with the relief right now.

3. This year, my boys are leaning about our ancestry. We are using Write Your Roots. Frankly, I think I'm enjoying it more than they are. I've been spending some late nights discovering and filling in family trees. Thanks to one of my aunts, we have one branch of the family traced back to England, about 1650.

4. We are full in to hummingbird migration! My feeder is swarming with these tiny feathered friends. We are going through lots of sugar to help fill them up and prepare them for the rest of their journey south. They are pretty feisty little buggers!

5. "Through the right exercise of the will, an entire change may be made in your life. By yielding up your will to Christ, you ally yourself with the power that is above all principalities and powers. You will have strength from above to hold you steadfast, and thus through constant surrender to God you will be enabled to live the new life, even the life of faith." Steps to Christ, p. 48.

May you have a blessed Sabbath day tomorrow.
"Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made." Genesis 2:1-3.

Random 5 on Friday, May 29

1. My digital alarm clock died this week. Yeah, I keep glancing toward my dresser, to check the time...

2. Little Bit's orthodontist appointment went fairly well. He has one tooth that is coming in...the first permanent that the orthodontist hasn't had to "coax" in by cutting into his gum.

3. I'm enjoying my garden box! It is at a fairly comfortable level for me to work in, without my back hurting too much. It's fun watching the seeds sprout and grow. I'm a tad anxious to see how they grow, etc., since I was so late putting most of them in, and the real heat of summer is nearly upon us.

4. Just a couple or so more days until the start of another hurricane season. Joy!

5. I am praying for family and friends who live in Texas and Oklahoma. Praying for their safety with the flooding all around.

Random 5 on Friday, May 1

1. How did May arrive so quickly? The year is already 1/3 of the way through. Kind of unreal, isn't it? The low temperature yesterday morning was 49 degrees! Yes, April 30, in southwest Mississippi! Chilly! At least we haven't had to put in the window AC unit in my bedroom yet.

2. We have a pair of wrens that have built a nest in a bucket, right outside my bedroom window facing the back patio. This week, Little Bit and I discovered that the babies have hatched. We're enjoying peeking in occasionally. To make it more interesting, Little Bit and I have recently begun reading The Burgess Bird Book for Children, and using Learning About Birds with Thornton Burgess from Simply Charlotte Mason.

3. We had some pretty crazy weather Monday. It actually wasn't too bad here in our little town, but Baton Rouge (where hubby works) was hit pretty hard. In fact, there were five confirmed tornadoes in the area that day. I was relieved to hear that hubby was safe. :)

4. This week we received a new review item...well, a package of items. For the first time in our years on the Schoolhouse Review Crew, we get to review something from Institute for Excellence in Writing! I feel overwhelmed! LOL

5. I've finally "hooked" my youngest two boys on audio books. Yeah; I feel accomplished now. ;)

Random 5 on Friday, April 24

Hey, we're back with the Random 5 on Friday! Thanks, Miranda!

1. Wednesday, Tim (my oldest son) took the boys and me to Baton Rouge, to see a couple movies. He and Botanist Boy saw Furious 7, and Little Bit and I saw Monkey Kingdom. I'm glad he took us; I hate driving in Baton Rouge!

2. Monkey Kingdom is a shorter movie, so we spent some time at Barnes & Noble, and Fresh Market. Believe it or not, I left Barnes & Noble without buying anything! I know; shocker!! But Fresh Market was a different story; I bought some almonds, and nut butters.

3. Parenting young adult children is harder than parenting teenagers! (which are harder than four year olds, which are harder than two year olds... ;) ) It keeps one praying, constantly. Oy!

4. We've been having a rather wet, cool spring this year. I guess that's kind of a relief, since I'm not looking forward to heat and humidity. I still would like a raised garden bed or two, though.

5. I'm considering starting a new weekly link up here on the blog, starting maybe tomorrow, or a week from tomorrow. I hope you'll join in with it, as well as my Wordless Wednesday link up.

Random 5 on Friday, February 6

1. This is a good morning for hot chocolate, with a drop of peppermint essential oil.

2. Today, hubby and his daughter are headed up to the hospital to see his mother. She's been in the hospital a month now, and things aren't looking too well for her. From the sounds of it, more of the grandchildren will be arriving throughout the weekend. The boys and I may make a trip up, too.

3. This "generation in between" is tough sometimes...watching our parents grow older; watching their peers begin to die. Watching our peers begin to lose their parents. And yet, still we have children to raise, and/or young adults to nurture.

4. I hope I'll be able to see the movie, "Old Fashioned," next weekend. (I wrote about it)

5. Botanist Boy is preparing to drive. Yikes! Hubby took him out to practice driving (on back roads!) last weekend. Yeah; I'll gladly let hubby be in charge of that! I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the fact he's old enough to be learning to drive! Oh, my heart! (Yes, Miranda, I'd like that rewind button, too!)

Random 5 on Friday, January 30

1. The weather has been unbelievable this week! Lovely, spring-like weather! Oh, yeah; ready for Spring!
2. The other day, the boys brought in a big box from storage. It contained the old stereo system that my first husband and I had. Hard to believe that it's 30+ years old! The boys were fascinated with it, as well as the old 45s. Botanist Boy was especially impressed that the record play stops automatically when the record is done. They've really been enjoying listening to the old records (some that were my grandfather's).
3. The boys had orthodontist appointments on Monday. Little Bit was supposed to get some more brackets put on, but his teeth still haven't come in far enough. However, Botanist Boy received good news! The countdown is on, for his braces to come off! He cannot wait!

4. I would like to ask for some extra prayers for my mom. She has been dealing with respiratory "junk" for several weeks now. She's been to the doctor more than once; received several rounds of meds. Please pray it will all clear up soon. ~Thanks.

5. I'm writing this Friday, as the sun goes down. Thus begins another Sabbath.
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. Genesis 2:1-3, KJV.

May you have a blessed Sabbath.

Random 5 on Friday, January 23

1.This week, I read this beautiful, thought-provoking passage, and just wanted to share it with you. It's discussing when Mary and Joseph brought the Infant Jesus to the temple to be dedicated.
The priest went through the ceremony of his official work. He took the child in his arms, and held it up before the altar. After handing it back to its mother, he inscribed the name “Jesus” on the roll of the first-born. Little did he think, as the babe lay in his arms, that it was the Majesty of heaven, the King of glory. The priest did not think that this babe was the One of whom Moses had written, “A Prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; Him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever He shall say unto you.” Acts 3:22. He did not think that this babe was He whose glory Moses had asked to see. But One greater than Moses lay in the priest’s arms; and when he enrolled the child’s name, he was enrolling the name of One who was the foundation of the whole Jewish economy. That name was to be its death warrant; for the system of sacrifices and offerings was waxing old; the type had almost reached its antitype, the shadow its substance. ~The Desire of Ages, by E.G. White.
Isn't that just beautiful to think about?

2. We had one outstanding day of school this week! We managed to get a lot accomplished. But then the next day my body was in such pain, I could barely move. We did manage to accomplish school, just with not as much gusto as the day before. It'd be so nice if every school day was a high accomplishment day, don't you think?

3. I haven't wanted to say anything, for fear I might "jinx" it, but I am actually losing inches around the waist, thighs, etc.! We have cut out most sweets, processed foods, sodas, etc. I've been drinking more water, with lemon essential oil. I don't have a scale, so I don't know how much weight I may be losing.

4. Thanks to the use of essential oils, I am taking acetaminophen less often. Seriously. Makes me so happy!

5. Hubby took today off work, because he planned to go to Jackson for HAM Fest (amateur radio). He wasn't feeling well, so didn't go after all. He may go tomorrow, though, and then stop in at the hospital to see his mom as well.

Random 5 on Friday, January 16

1. The weather can't make up it's mind whether it wants to be January, or March! Oy! Bouncing back and forth between frigid and pleasant is hard on the immune system! (But at least we have sunshine right now!!)

2. Finally got Botanist Boy back to his violin lesson this week...only to have the bridge on his violin pop out again, and then when his teacher was putting it back in, one of the strings broke.

3. This week our first review item for the Schoolhouse Review Crew arrived! Watch for our review the end of February!
4. Lately I've been "itching" to do some stamping or scrapbooking. It's been a long while since I last did either.

5. We (the boys and I) are trying to get a cottage industry, or two or three, up and running. It's been something the kids and I have wanted to do for several years now. Trying to come up with a niche we can fill.

Random 5 on Friday, January 9

1. Sunday my husband got a call from his siblings, that his mother was in the hospital, and it looked pretty serious. So we packed a change of clothes (in case we had to stay a night or two) and headed up to the hospital. We did stay overnight. Spent a lot of time in the waiting room. The boys and I got to see Mamaw R once, briefly; but hubby was in more times, fortunately.

2. Monday was my birthday! Yeah, most of it was spent in the hospital waiting room, but the boys and I did get to spend an hour or so at a (relatively) nearby park.

3. Wednesday evening my guys took me out for my birthday supper. We learned that the food is better at that restaurant on the weekends rather than on weeknights!

4. We've had some bitterly cold weather this week...Yes, I realize that is a relative term! For our little corner of the country, it was frigid, with humidity and wind added to the below-freezing temps.
5. Today the boys and I made a new batch of laundry detergent, and our first attempt at dishwasher tabs. The dishwasher tabs have to sit for 24 hours, so I don't know how they'll turn out yet. I'll let you know, later. Have you ever made your own detergents or household cleaning supplies? Please share.

Random 5 on Friday, December 19

It's been months since I participated in the Random 5 on Friday! Of course, Miranda seems to have taken a bit of a break, as well. (grin) Hey, it's good to be back at it!

1. Today marks the sixth anniversary of my husband and I saying, "I do!" I'll write more about that in another post.

2. Our parakeet went to a new home yesterday. I hope he'll be very happy there, and get the love and attention he deserves. He hadn't been getting much attention at all (aside from food, water, clean cage, etc.) since Jen moved out.

3. It really doesn't feel much like Christmas. The house feels too empty without Tim and Jen in it. Our plans for Christmas are still so "up in the air." Not sure where nor how we are celebrating this year, but I know that I will be away from one or both of my oldest two. Makes my heart ache a little (okay, a lot!).

4. Botanist Boy had violin lesson again this week, his first since the end of September. Look at the lovely ornaments his violin teacher made for him!

And the one I purchased from her and her mom.
5. This is pretty much all we have done, to decorate for Christmas. We used only the ornaments belonging to Botanist Boy and Little Bit this year, as well as the ornaments we are receiving from an ornament exchange with some of our Five in a Row online friends.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas! May God richly bless you as you celebrate the birth of His Son.
