Z is for Zero Tolerance

Is there something for which God has "zero tolerance?" Do you know how I know that there is something for which He has zero tolerance?

God has zero tolerance for sin. How I know this: "For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment." 2 Peter 2:4.

While God doesn't tolerate sin, He does love the sinner. Fortunately for us, He does forgive us our sins.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16.

Who has sinned? "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" Romans 3:23. "Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin." John 8:34.

What are the consequences of sin? "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23. "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid." Romans 6:1,2. "...when He (the Holy Spirit) is come, He will reprove the world of sin..." John 16:8.

So, what does God require of us? "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9.

What is heaven's reaction when we repent? "Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth." Luke 15:10.

"For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him." 2 Corinthians 5:21. "Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father." Galatians 1:4.

May you always feel His love, forgiveness, and presence.

Y is for Yesterday's Classics

A few years ago, we were introduced to Yesterday's Classics, when we were reviewing for the Schoolhouse Review Crew. At that time, we received the Yesterday's Classics Ebook Treasury, volume 1 (225 books). Later I purchased volume 2 (106 books).

A couple weeks ago, I learned that volume 3 (104 books) was available! I couldn't resist, I had to purchase volume 3 as well.

Yesterday's Classics offers classic children's literature, which was originally published in the late 1800s through early 1900s. They offer print copies, as well as ebook versions (mobi and epub). I am able to have these ebooks on my Kindle, Little Bit's iPad, and Botanist Boy's Samsung tablet.

These books are great to use with any literature-based form of homeschooling, such as Charlotte Mason/Ambleside Online.

I will admit, there are some books I don't use, such as fairy tales. There are plenty, though, that make it worthwhile to me.

This year, Little Bit and I have been learning about birds, using the Burgess Bird Book for Children, from Yesterday's Classics, along with Learning about Birds with Thornton Burgess, from Simply Charlotte Mason, and Fifty Favorite Birds Coloring Book by Dover Publications. What fun we've been having, and I know that Little Bit is becoming more attuned to watching and listening for birds.

Anyway, be sure to check out the Yesterday's Classics collections. I am sure there will be something you will want to get.

X is for eXhaustion {100 Themes, with link up}

I struggle with insomnia, which usually leaves me feeling exhausted. I will admit, though, that there were a couple times in my life I felt truly, thoroughly exhausted.

A few months back, I mentioned that I'd taken a trip to Alaska with my folks, nearly 26 years ago. It was difficult for me to get much sleep, because it was daylight the whole time we were there. When is it was time to leave Alaska, I flew from Anchorage to Seattle, then caught AmTrak from Seattle to West Glacier, Montana. I didn't sleep much on the train.

When I arrived in West Glacier, expecting to meet only my husband, I found that he had his niece and nephew with him...with plans to spend the day sightseeing in Glacier National Park. Before the day was half over, I was literally falling asleep on my feet!

Another time I remember feeling total exhaustion was shortly after Little Bit was born. That fall, I allowed myself to be persuaded by folks at church to send Tim and Jen to the church school in Great Falls, Montana. We lived in Choteau at that time, and Great Falls is 60 miles away. I only had to meet the teacher in Fairfield (17 miles from Choteau) in the mornings. In the afternoons, one of the teacher's sisters-in-law met me in Fairfield to return the kids.

So, I had a nursing newborn, a nursing toddler, and had to make a 32-mile round trip morning and afternoon...in Montana winter weather! There were some mornings I was so tired, sleepy, exhausted!, that I'd have to have the windows rolled down, plus bounce on the seat while driving, to keep myself awake!! That was scary-exhausted!

Have there been times when you've been exhausted? Are you exhausted now?

Jesus says: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28, KJV. Be sure to come to Him, allow Him to give you that rest.

W is for The "W" in the Sky

I bet you thought I'd talk (yet again) about Whooping Cranes for the letter "W" in this round of Blogging Through the Alphabet. I was planning to!! But I decided to share another of my poems instead.

The “W” in the Sky

How small and insignificant I feel;
I really don’t know why I’m here,
Nor why I should be;
No one really seems to care.

But, oh, my friend, that’s not true.
Look up in the stars--
What do you see?

Why, Lord, so many stars--
But I don’t understand…
Oh, now I see!
It’s...it’s a “W”--
But what does it mean?

Wendy, you are important in My sight,
Don’t you see?
I died for you on Calvary--
It was for you that I died.
Your sins are washed away,
And there’s a home for you in heaven
If you will only accept.

Oh, yes, Jesus--I accept!
But, Master, why me?
I was cruel enough to kill You,
My sins are washed away, yes,
But what can I do in return
For all You’ve done for me?

My child, listen…
All you must do is accept My gift,
Share it with others,
Live your life right--I’ll help!
You have many talents--
I know, I gave them to you…
Take, for instance, the one you’re using now--

You could win souls, maybe.

V is for Vulnerable

I've been trying to decide what to write about for the letter "V" and felt the Lord speaking to my heart to write about vulnerable/vulnerability.

Now I sit here, in front of a blank screen, trying to decide what to actually write about being vulnerable. And, yes, I have had two weeks to come up with something! Talk about feeling vulnerable!

Vulnerable is an adjective, which means: capable of being physically or emotionally wounded or hurt; open to moral attack, criticism, temptation, persuasion, censure.

Children are the most vulnerable.

I learned this week that April is National Child Abuse Prevention month. Jen and I saw hundreds of pinwheels on the lawn at the hospital last week. Maybe you've seen them at locations near you. Other resources for information about National Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention: Childwelfare; National Child Traumatic Stress Network; Prevent Child Abuse America.

"In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge." Proverbs 14:26, KJV.

Christians are vulnerable, as well. We just need to put our trust in Him.

"But my eyes are unto You, O God my Lord, in You is my trust; do not leave my soul defenseless." Psalm 141:8, MEV.

Parents are vulnerable. I think we become more vulnerable as our children grow up, become adults, and develop lives of their own. Sometimes our hearts are left raw. There are times when I feel like I can't "do" this "parenting thing" anymore! Am I the only one who feels that way?

Then there are days (which far outnumber the bad days!!) that I just praise God that I have the privilege of being Mom to my kids. I am proud of who and what they are becoming.

When we homeschool our children, we become very vulnerable. Attacks can come from all sides. The ones that hurt the most, though, are the ones that come from extended family. Stay strong, dear homeschooling parent. Daily ask God for guidance in training your children for His honor and glory. He will be with you, always.

I know there was more I was thinking of writing, but it has fled my memory for now. Perhaps I will add more later.

U is for Unchangeable

The Bible says, "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." Hebrews 13:8, KJV.  "For I am the Lord, I change not." Malachi 3:6, KJV.

In other words, He is unchangeable.

"Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it He had rested from all His work which God created and made." Genesis 2:1-3, KJV.

"Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you. Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. " Exodus 31:13-15, KJV.

What did Jesus say about the Sabbath day when He walked on this earth? "For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day." Matthew 12:8, KJV, and Mark 2:28. Read also Luke 14:1-5.

Did Jesus keep the Sabbath day? Yes; even in death, He kept the Sabbath day. That is the day He rested in the tomb:

"And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus. 

And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre. And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid. 

And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.

And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils." Mark 15:42-16:9, KJV. (You can find this same story in Matthew 27:57-28:8, and Luke 23:50-24:7). Remember this, this Easter weekend.

"Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them...And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God." Ezekiel 20:12, 20, KJV.

How does God want us to keep the Sabbath?

"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." Exodus 20:8-11, KJV.

"If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord." Isaiah 58:13, 14, KJV.

Will we keep the Sabbath in Heaven and in the earth made new?

"For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord." Isaiah 66:22, 23, KJV.

T is for Today

Today I hugged a total stranger.

Yes, I really did.

I took Jen to work, then went to pick up my mother from physical therapy to take her to her hair appointment. After that, I had to stop at WalMart to pick up grated cheese and olives for tomorrow's potluck dinner after church. We're having haystacks! Yum!

Then I headed back out to my van. I loaded the bags in to my van, took the cart to the cart corral, got in to my van, and left. Next on the agenda was lunch at Just a Cupcake. Fridays they serve a scrumptious vegetable quiche.

As I was helping my mom out, with her little walker and portable concentrater (oxygen), etc., I realized my purse was not in the van! Ladies, you know that sick, sinking feeling...I sent her on in to Just a Cupcake, and I headed back to WalMart, asking the Lord to protect my purse.

I parked near where we were before; checked the cart corral, and saw my purse wasn't there, so I headed in to Customer Service. I had to wait (impatiently!) while a couple other customers were helped. Then it was my turn.

The two ladies were very helpful. They first looked in the office. Then one of them went off to find one of the cart-pushers. I stepped off to the side to wait, nearly in tears. Meanwhile, another customer came up in line behind me. While I sat there on the bench, she presented her case.

Suddenly, the customer service lady said, "Ma'am, is this your purse?" The other customer turned around, and presented my purse!

I jumped up, and exclaimed, "Yes!! It is!"

Then I rushed over, took my purse, and hugged the lady who had brought my purse in, while thanking her profusely. She said she noticed right away, in the parking lot, that I'd left my purse in the cart. She even tried to follow us in her vehicle, but then saw that we turned down the road to the next town over. She couldn't follow us that far, so she went back to WalMart.

This just shows that God takes care of the little things. We know He can take care of the large things, as well...Like sending the Child Support money.

I discovered on the CSE website this week, on our case, that it appears payments have ceased from the ex and that CSE has sent a letter of inquiry; also that a request was sent to the employer to deduct support from the ex's wages. Today there is a message there saying: "The current actions taking place on your case are not available to view on eServices at this time. Please contact us for more information."

Whenever this happens, when the child support money doesn't come, many things go through one's mind. Why? Why is the payment not made? Did he change jobs (yet again...without informing me...)? Did he die in an automobile accident or something?

You know, these teenage boys kind of like to eat. And they are growing like weeds, so often need new clothes. I need gasoline for the van so I can take them to the places they need to go...like church.

So, I try to just trust God, and leave it all in His hands. Sometimes that's hard to do. I lose sleep when I am worried (and I already have problems with insomnia!).

"But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19. Claiming, and clinging to, this promise right now.

S is for Sign up!

As you, my regular followers, already know, my daughter has Type 1 Diabetes. I don't blog about it much anymore, since she has moved out of my home, but it's still a constant thought and concern in the back of my mind.

One of our most enormous concerns, of course, is the cost of her insulin and other supplies, and the fact that she really can't afford the medical care and supplies.

When she turned 19, Medicaid kicked her off. She went for 3 years without insurance of any kind...and no way to pay for her medical expenses. It was a frightful time! Last fall, my husband was finally forced to get insurance, even though we really couldn't afford to. He went far above the call of duty, and is carrying insurance for all four of my kids (even though my ex really ought to be).

Even with the insurance, the expenses are still a huge stretch for Jen.

Our wonderful church family here in Florida has decided to host a 5K Run/Walk to raise awareness...and to raise funds for my lovely girl's medical expenses. We would be so grateful if you would join us, no matter where you live, on May 29, 2016. It's very possible my younger two boys and I will be back in Mississippi by that time. If we are, I hope to participate by having a walk there, and maybe we'll have one or two families join us there. I'm already trying to get my body prepared to do this!

R is for "Reflections" {100 Themes}

I'm sharing another poem this week, written in the fall of my junior year of high school.

Reflections

A tiny little pond, so very plain it is, 
Reflects a glorious sunset, and all its colors;
The fluffy orange clouds, changing to gray, 
Set against a pale blue sky
Made doubly splendid by the pond.

A wet, mopped floor of a patient’s room
Reflects the scene thru the window;
Tall, Autumn-clad trees reaching up
To a clear, cloud-studded blue sky
Seen more plainly in both floor and sky.

A happy, smiling face of sunshine
Reflects the love of the Master;
Just a lowly human, so very unworthy,
But having received pardon and peace
Made plain to all who come in contact with Him.

Q is for Quiet Place

If you've been reading my blog for awhile, you may have discovered that I occasionally share a poem I've written. I wrote most of my poems during my high school years. I wrote my first poem when I was only ten years old. Frankly, I haven't written many since my kids were born (my oldest is now 24).

A majority of my poems were written while I was in a quiet place, in nature. Some of them even described the quiet place in which I was partaking of the sights and sounds of nature.

I Met With Him

I come to this place of quietude,
A special spot in the woods
With the sun shining through the leaves--
Just to unravel tangled thoughts.

I look up to the clear blue sky
To the fluffy, sailing clouds,
And know down in my lonely heart
That God is near, and hears me.

All around me are the hushed woods,
With joyful songs of the birds
And squirrels rummaging through the leaves;
All are quite cautious of me.

I am filled with awe and wonder
And love for my Creator;
He brought me to this lovely place
And speaks in the quietness.

I come, alone, to talk to Him.
Take my life and use it, Lord;
I give it over, all to You.
Thank You for speaking to me.

P is for Pizza Making

 Earlier this month, we got together with our friends to working on the Pathfinder honor of Pizza Maker.

 Requirements:

 1.Do a short research on the history of pizza.

2.Make a list of the basic ingredients for the pizza dough.

3.Find out at least one biblical text about each single ingredient. Explain at least 4 of these texts and their symbolic meaning.

4.Describe the leavening process.

5.What is the difference between Neapolitan style pizza and Roman style pizza?

6.According to its shape and size, how many kinds of pizza do you know?

7.What are three different ways to bake a pizza? Describe the differences in detail.

8.What is the ideal temperature if you use a wood oven to cook pizza? What is the ideal temperature if you use an electric oven?

9.Prepare a Pizza Margherita.

(answers can be "Googled" or found at Wiki-Helps) We actually went over all of the questions orally, together as a group. You may also require your Pathfinder/student to write out the answers. Obviously the best part is making and eating a pizza!

They all did an excellent job on their crusts! They were perfect! Their pizzas were delicious. We all decided we'd like to open a pizzeria. <grin>

A wonderful resource for learning about pizza, the history of pizza, and how pizza is made, etc., would be the Pizza Party Download N Go unit study, by Amanda Bennett.

Then the other day was National Pizza Day, so we had to have pizza again. This time I just purchased pizza, from Papa John's.

N is for Nature Study

I missed posting my "N" post for Blogging Through the Alphabet post last week!! So, I'll post it this week, and hopefully still get "O" posted!

In case you haven't noticed, we really enjoy nature and the out of doors around here. We also like to do our part in protecting the environment.

During our current visit to Florida, we have been concentrating quite a bit on nature study.

Little Bit and I have been studying birds, using such resources as The Burgess Bird Book for Children; Blacky the Crow; Learning About Birds; the Pathfinder honor, Birds; the Owls Note Pack, from In the Hands of a Child; and even the All Owls--Fun Study, by Homeschool Bits.

Recently we were able to go on quite a birding expedition. We went to St. Marks, Florida, with the hopes of seeing the flyover of the final ultralight led flight of the Whooping Cranes. Due to uncooperative weather, the birds were not able to fly that morning, but we were able to meet the Operation Migration team anyway. To make up for that, we went to nearby Wakulla Springs State Park, and took a boat tour. We spotted a large number of water birds! It was like a birder's paradise.

(Oh, we saw alligators and turtles as well!)

Botanist Boy has been working on several Pathfinder nature honors, as part of his high school biology course. Most recently, he has completed most of the requirements for Bats, and Bats Advanced. He still must complete this requirement: Build or purchase a bat box, know the best place to put it and install it at a home, church, or your school. Record for 3 months what kind and how many bats have made it their home. Grandpa is helping out with that; he recently purchased a bat house. With Botanist Boy's help, he will get it set up, then Botanist Boy will be able to observe it for three months, or more. (The "bat lady" indicated that it may take up to three months before bats actually discover and move in to the bat house).

The other day we heard the "bat lady" speak about pollinators, their importance, and how to help preserve pollinators and protect them from the man-made dangers they face. She also had a couple of her (disabled, rescued) bats with her.

We plan to go to a local spring soon, to observe the wintering Manatees. Yes, I'll share a photo or two! We also hope to travel a couple area birding trails.
