This Week at Rossmont--February 24-March 2, 2013

In my life this week…Things have been relatively "quiet" and running somewhat smoothly. Hopefully not the "calm before the storm" type of situation! ;-)

In our homeschool this week…Little Bit has been "Rowing" the book, Grass Sandals, and learning about Japan, Japanese culture, and haiku. Next week we will cover more topics.
Art lesson, watercolor pencils

My uncle got this in Japan, when he visited there during the Korean War.
Little Bit and I played a round of 10 Days in Asia. We decided we need a couple more players to play with us!

We also used Grass Sandals as sort of an introduction to poetry, since Botanist Boy is currently using Classical Academic Press Poetry (which you'll hear more about in an upcoming review!).

I pulled out my notebook of the poems that I have written. Little Bit seemed quite impressed that I wrote my first poems when I was his age! They both seemed somewhat impressed to learn I've written over 160 since that first one. ;-)

In our study of Genesis Through Deuteronomy & Ancient Egypt, we covered the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and read more from Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors.

For Little Bit's science, we watched a few videos about bears, with a few more to come, via Netflix.

We began a new music program for the keyboard, Adventus. You'll hear more about that in the future, too! We had a challenge at first getting things set up...only because the cable from keyboard to computer that I was trying to use was not a properly-functioning cable. Since hubby had one in his "stash" that does work, we are up and running!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…We like using unit studies from Amanda Bennett. Check out this week's specials. She is also starting a co-op on Facebook for her Easter unit study, beginning March 4.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…Fortunately, we didn't have to go anywhere. Well, actually, I did send Tim and Jen on errands; Tim took the van in for the annual inspection for me, and even did a bit of grocery shopping for me.

Oh, Jen and I did make a quick trip to the little library here in town, to pick up some books about Japan, and Ancient Egypt.

I’m cookingMexican Peasant Chili, Santa Fe Veggie-Chicken Salad, Festive Cornbread
Recipes can be found at: Micheff Sisters. I did sprinkle "regular" cheese on these, rather than vegan.

I’m grateful for…the fact that my oldest has his driver's license, and that he and his sister can run errands for me now! It makes it a lot easier for me to be able to stay focused on homeschooling the younger two!

I’m praying for…my children; for big decisions the older two have to face; for my young teenage boy and relationship decisions he's currently facing. And for their hearts, that their hearts will always tender to hear God's voice.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share (silly, serious or both!)…

The greatest want of the world is the want of men—men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall. ~Education, page 57

    1. Blossom, the book I quoted from is called Education, by Mrs. E.G. White. You can buy a copy for Kindle on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Education-ebook/dp/B004FN1M5U/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1362510339&sr=1-1&keywords=Education+by+Ellen+G+White

Or you can find it for free at: https://egwwritings.org/ (then search under the ebooks tab, and education under categories in the left column). You can also read the book right online, at this site.

    1. Beth, Tim is 21 (almost 22), and he JUST got his license a few months ago. Jen is 19 (almost 20) and still doesn't have hers, although she had PLANNED to the beginning of February, till her boss fired her and she had no money then to pay her portion of insurance. Now, my 13 year old? I doubt he will wait until nearly 20 for his license! LOL He'll probably be begging for it at the youngest possible age! LOL
