Vocabulary SpellingCity {Schoolhouse Review Crew}

Spelling was always something that came fairly easy for me. But I am learning that it doesn't, for my children. When offered the opportunity to use and review Vocabulary SpellingCity.com, I jumped at the chance!

Vocabulary SpellingCity’s mission is to be an efficient game-based study of literacy skills using any word list. The learning activities and games cover Elementary, Middle, and High School Vocabulary, Spelling, Writing, Parts of Speech, Handwriting, and Alphabetical Order.

VocabularySpellingCity.com has:
  • Over 42,000 spelling words with customizable sentences and definitions
  • A REAL person who says each word and sentence
  • Free home pages for teachers and parents to save lists
  • Teacher training videos
  • Free printable handwriting worksheets
  • Free teaching resources with lists and lesson plans
  • Twenty-five games to play online or to print such as:
  • Alphabetical Order, Unscramble, Parts of Speech, HangMouse, Crossword Puzzle, WordSearch, and Vocabulary Test.
  • A free forum and newsletters

Featured Vocabulary and Spelling Lists:
  • Multiple Meanings
  • Science Vocabulary
  • Dolch Sight Words
  • Contractions
  • Homophones
  • Compound Words
  • Math Words
  • Analogies
  • Possessive Nouns
  • State Capitals
There are word lists already made, by grade level, and various topics (math, science, social studies) etc.

There are also lists taken from popular literature, such as: Madeline; Good Night, Moon; The Ugly Duckling; Cricket in Times Square; Little House on the Prairie; Adventures of Tom Sawyer; Huckleberry Finn; Little Women; Pride and Prejudice; Canterbury Tales.

I like the fact that you can also create your own word lists using math vocabulary they are currently learning; science vocabulary from their science text; or geography words.

We were excited to learn about the free app for iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch. Since Little Bit got an iPod Touch for his birthday, we were able to load the app on to it for him. He's been having fun with that!

Botanist Boy has been rather reluctant to use Vocabulary SpellingCity, but I plan for him to continue using throughout the year, so perhaps he will increase his spelling skills, and won't have to be asking me so often how to spell various words while he is writing letters to his best bud, or his pen friends.

You can register for a free account, as well.
