TOS Review: WriteShop, Primary, Book A

Do your children enjoy writing? Do they know how to write well, effectively?

As much as I thoroughly enjoy writing, and want to pass that enjoyment on to my children, I still find it challenging in showing them how to write well.

Here is a program that is helping me in getting my youngest started in the "mechanics" of creative writing!

WriteShop offers quality writing resources for kindergarten through high school, which help us teach writing with confidence.

The engaging, step-by-step lessons present students with the building blocks of the writing process, which are pre-writing, brainstorming, writing, and revising, and help the instructor know how to edit and evaluate the students’ work.

We received the Primary, Book A, Teacher's manual in eBook format for our review process, as well as the activity set worksheet pack in eBook format. I was able to load the teacher's manual on to my Kindle Fire, which made it more convenient to sit beside Little Bit while we worked on the suggested activities.

I like the way the suggested lesson plan is laid out for you:

You have the option of covering one lesson in 3 weeks, or 2 weeks, or 1 week. At this time we have been following more the 3 week plan, but I think when school starts back up in August, we'll use the 2 week plan.

Even though Little Bit is just finishing 2nd grade, due to his developmental delays, we have been using Book A (which is recommended for Kindergarten, first grade, or a "reluctant" second grader). "The program accommodates pre-writers as well as beginning and developing writers, teaching the skills of the writing process at the very simplest level." It has been a good match for him!

Sample Lesson

Sample Worksheets
Each lesson covers:
  • Guided Writing Practice
  • Pre-writing Activities
  • Brainstorming
  • The Writing Project
  • Editing and Revising
  • Activity Set Worksheets
  • Publishing the Project
  • Evaluating Child's Work
I think Little Bit's favorite part was the publishing the project. One method was creating a kite from his project.

I'm definitely thinking we'll be ordering more of the primary level books for him. His desire to write has truly been sparked! Now he is attempting to write stories on his own (only, his spelling skills are not on the same level as his imagination!! ;-) ).
