Brinkman Adventures is an exciting radio show which tells true modern missionary stories, using the fictional Brinkman family. This season contains two 2-part episodes, as well as two single episodes.
History buff that I am, I enjoyed the Dutch Underground episodes the most. The Brinkmans' great-grandparents lived in The Netherlands during World War II, and share stories of the Nazi invasion and Opi's involvement in the Dutch Underground. One of my favorite parts was when he and his friends "stole" ration cards from the pockets of coats hung on a red-ribbon marked coat rack during the Christmas Eve service at church. They risked their lives to help the Jews!
For my own personal reading, I am currently listening to Corrie Ten Boom's story on audio book. The Dutch Underground episodes bring her story to life even more.
SJ's favorite episode was Twice Born Fly, when Charlie swallowed a fly! It also shares how, even at a very young age, he gave his heart to Jesus.
I could really resonate with Samantha, in I Wonder Why, who struggles with having to give up her belongings, her home, her friends, to move with her family to India, to work at an orphanage. There are challenges they faced at the orphanage, and God's answers to prayers.
If you want to learn more about the events that inspired the stories in Season 6, you'll find them here.
I found their discussion of the Sabbath especially interesting:
"In the Bible, God encourages His people to take a day of rest each week. Not only does this help our bodies to recover from a long week of work, it also helps us to remember that He is the One that sustains us in our work and makes it prosper. The Bultman family celebrates a day of rest in a special way every week. Ian Bultman worked as a music pastor for many years so Sunday was a busy work day for him. Because Ian wasn’t able to really rest on Sunday, he and his wife decided their family would rest from Friday night to Saturday night. Many Jewish people also celebrate a day of rest from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. They call this the Sabbath.
Um, yeah, there are other people besides Jews who keep the Sabbath. <grin> My family comes from a long-line of Sabbath keepers.
Every Friday afternoon, Amy and the kids work together to clean the house and get ready for their day of rest. After supper is over and the dishes are done, they turn off the internet and their phones. They break open the sparkling juice, get out the nice glasses, and then light a candle. One by one, they go around the table and share something they are thankful to God for from the past week. For the next 24 hours, they rest, relax and spend time together as a family. They read, take naps or go for walks on the beach near their house. They also chose to make this a media-free time (except for audio drama, of course). Sometimes they plan a fun outing together as a family, and often Ian and Amy will take a child out for some one on one time. This has become the family’s favorite day of the week and helped prevent burnout during busy seasons of life."
All of the episodes are great to listen to. Be sure to check them out for yourself.
