Did it snow much when you were a child--tell something about it, what did you do?
I was born in the midwest (Indiana), and lived in Michigan for the first several years of my life. Yes, we had snow! ;-) A wet, fairly heavy snow. I must admit, though, I don't much remember winters in Michigan. I do remember, though, taking dogsled rides around our property! My parents and my grandparents raised Siberian Huskies. We had a team of those beautiful dogs. I remember taking a ride around our place, in the light of the full moon.
After Michigan, we lived near the coast of North Carolina.
I remember one winter there, we did have snow....several inches...maybe a foot or so. Then it warmed up, and froze again, which made an ice crust over the snow. I remember my dad driving around, with a shovel and gunny sacks, getting people unstuck. I also remember sliding down the bank of the railroad bed across the street from the little church school we attended/at which my folks taught. Also, one of the nearby cities turned on the fire hydrants to wash the snow off the streets!!
I am sure it snowed, at least a little, the winter we lived in Amarillo, Texas....but I can't remember for sure. I know we went to Santa Fe one time, to go skiing. That was my one and only attempt to learn to snow ski!
We did have snow at least once while we lived in each Mobile, Alabama, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I remember large, wet flakes falling, while we were at school. The kids were all so excited....and school was let out early. In Mobile, the snow was all gone before we even got home. In Baton Rouge, the kids just stood there screaming and dancing with excitement....until my dad made the first snowball! Then it was the biggest snowball fight I had ever seen!! It seemed like the battle was between all the students, and my dad and one of the other teachers.
My high school years I attended a boarding school in Tennessee. We had snow during the winter. I remember one time, we had a huge snowball fight out in the recreation field; nearly all the students participated. One of the junior college level students was from Finland. He could make and throw snowballs so fast!!
Did you and your father share any interests together--what and why?
Backpacking and hiking, in the Smokies! I suppose the "why" would be because we both love the outdoors, God's book of nature. My folks did a wonderful job, teaching my brothers and me to have a real love of and appreciation for nature.

Hi Wendy! I enjoyed your Memoir Mondays post! :) I think she comes up with some really great questions. I am enjoying blogging about them myself and hope to participate on Mondays as often as I can. It was fun to read about your "snow experiences" when you were growing up since I sure didn't have very many of them growing up in the South! Have a great week.

Now, ice reminds me of here. When we experienced the first ice storm, I remember stepping out onto our steep driveway and not stopping sliding until I got to the bottom. I'm sure it looked very comical! Thanks for participating - great post!

ReplyDeleteLoved reading this post. Brought back memories of my childhood and snow. My birthday is in August and I remember there being a 5' wall of snow on either side of the road one year in Wyoming. Great fun!
ReplyDeleteOh...I'm originally from Mississippi myself and when we moved back down there, from Idaho, during a HUGE snowstorm to take care of Pappaw....we got an extra 2 weeks of Christmas vacation because there were snow "warnings". Us kids just kept thinking....why? In Idaho it was past my knees when we left there and I am the oldest, and we went to school. LOL
Too much fun! I LOVE snow. (visiting from the crew)
