Download N Go: Autumn Treasures Review

What comes to mind when you hear the word, "autumn"? Apples and apple cider? Pumpkins? Colorful leaves? Birds migrating South? Since moving to the South from Montana a few years ago, autumn has become so much more welcome and anticipated for me, because it means the hot summer days are growing shorter and cooler...a welcome relief!

As part of the Download N Go review team, we were recently afforded the opportunity to use and review Autumn Treasures. It was a fun one to dive in to, since I love the fall colors. This unit has several video clips which display landscape covered in the brilliant colors of autumn, as well as several fall-time activities.

The main objectives for the week are:

Day 1: What is Autumn?
Day 2: Science Secrets of Autumn
Day 3: People and Places of Autumn
Day 4: Time for Tips and Treasures of Autumn
Day 5: Goodies and Gadgets of Autumn

And a small sampling of the pages used in this unit:

The boys took short nature walks, nearly every day, led by one or the other of their older siblings. They found several different leaves (still unchanged in color, yet), which we used to make some leaf rubbings. Apparently my youngest had never done this before. He was so totally enthralled with the process!! And the outcome awed and excited him!...I have a feeling we will do more of this over the next few weeks! ;)

Here are a few of the books we read during this unit:

Books we used

The boys seemed to especially enjoy reading the books about popcorn! ;-) It made them very hungry for popcorn, though!! So, yes, that was our late afternoon snack that day.

I think they were equally interested in learning about the seasons, and why leaves change colors. We also discussed migration and hibernation. We already know about migration, since we have spent a few years, keeping track of the Whooping Crane migration, and last year and this, enjoying the hummingbirds when they come through by the hundreds!

(If you'd like to see video clips of the hummers at our feeders, you can go here, or here.)

I think one of our favorite parts of Autumn Treasures was making the leaf rubbings. The look of awe on the face of my youngest was...priceless! I think they turned out pretty cool, too!!

We are now eagerly waiting for the Harvest Moon, and for the leaves to truly change colors around here. Since the Autumnal Equinox is just day after tomorrow, this enticing Download N Go is on sale at 20% off the normal price of $7.95. So hurry over to The Old Schoolhouse Store to purchase your own copy before September 24 for only $6.36! Be sure to read what other members of the review team have written on the Download N Go blog.
