Civil War Reenactment

Have you ever been to one?  Yesterday we attended our first reenactment.  It was quite fascinating!

The first demonstration we stopped at was for the telegraph.  The man gave us a demonstration, as well as telling us some of the history of the telegraph, and the part it played during the Civil War.  Our communications systems have come a long way since then, haven't they?

We walked around, looking at all the sutlers' booths.  We also listened to the medical demonstration.  My, how barbaric their tools and methods were.  But, hey, in some ways, they still are!!!  LOL!

Walked around in the Union camp, briefly.  The Confederate camp was larger--naturally.  And as we were walking through the Conferderate camp, one of the reenactors was also trying to recruit us!  (For those of you who don't know, we moved from Montana to Florida about a year ago; my kids are Montana born; I am Hoosier born.  I consider us Northerners!)  It just struck me as humorous, to be "recruited" by a representative of the Confederates!

Have any of you ever considered being a reenactor?  Do you think it is an okay thing for Christians to do?  I mean, I know it is history.  But firing arms?

Anyway, we also watched them fire artillery, kind of like small cannons.  What a boom!  And they were actually firing cannon balls.  There was a "mock trial" and "execution" at the "saloon."  And there was a musical program, with stringed instruments being played: guitar, banjo, fiddle, etc.

Then there was a mock battle--which lasted about an hour or so.  They had Cavalry units, as well as infantry, and cannons.  The cannons just used gun powder; the rifles, too, I think.  Of course, there were "wounded" and "dead" on the field.

They were taking up donations, to help restore Jefferson Davis' home in Mississippi (I think it was) which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

And at the end, they paid tribute to two reenactors who had recently died, by having two riderless horses walk past us.  Then the reenactors shot their rifles into the air--as a tribute to them, and all men and women in the armed forces.  The cannons fired, too.

All together I took 73 pictures on my digital camera!!  If only I could figure out how to post pictures in my blog!!  And, I was not wise enough to remember the sunscreen!! <---Here is how red I am now!  And I had shorts on, so the backs of my calves are a bit red, too, now!  Ow!!!!  Ah, well; I think it was worth it!  Even if I was so sore by the end, I could hardly move!  LOL!
