Rosie's Doll Clothes Patterns {Schoolhouse Review Crew}

My twenty-year-old daughter still likes her American Girl dolls. But, hey! her grandmother is a doll collector, with an extensive collection, so I guess Jen "comes by it naturally." She has been interested in being able to make clothes for her dolls for a few years now, so when the chance came from Rosie's Doll Clothes Patterns to use and review the online course, Learn How to Make Doll Clothes Video Course with 8 Free Doll Clothes Patterns, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity for my girl.
We received full access to all 6 weeks of Rosie’s How to Sew Doll Clothes Online Course.

The Course has just over 130 videos that take you through everything you will need to know about sewing doll clothes.  The course is designed to give you everything you need, including Cool Tips and Troubleshooting videos. Such as:
  • An outline of tools, fabric and elastic
  • How to prepare your patterns and fabric
  • Tutorials on sewing basic stitches and seams
  • Various methods of hemming on the sewing machine and the serger
  • Creating small casings, tubes and straps
  • Working with elastic
  • The best way to gather fabric
  • Attaching sleeves, frills, ribbing, collars and a variety of trimmings
We also have access to all bonus patterns and their video tutorials.
We received:
  • Sport Shorts
  • Crop Top
  • Sarong
  • Halter Top
  • Summer Nightie
  • Hat
  • Pumpkin
  • Underpants
All come with PDF pattern pieces and basic written instructions and step by step videos on how to make the outfits as well.

When we first received our login information, I went and logged in on my computer. After logging in, I found in the left column, buttons for weeks 1-6 under "How to Sew Doll Clothes Course." Below that is "Course Bonus Patterns," also with buttons for weeks 1-6 underneath. I'm not sure if they are to be viewed consecutively or concurrently, but I think Jen watched the "How to Sew Doll Clothes" videos consecutively. Then when she was ready to begin attempting to sew, she chose the videos for which ever outfits she wanted to work on.

I think it is great that she could login to our account, and watch the videos on her Kindle, because then she could watch anywhere! And she could have the Kindle right beside her, as she worked on cutting out the patterns, and her fabric, and even while working at the sewing machine.
She is a visual learner (like her mother), so she really appreciated being able watch, over and over if need be, the video instructions for each step of the sewing process.
It had been several years since I had even used my sewing machine, so we had a bit of a "fight" with it at first. (It probably needs to be oiled; I just don't know how to do that, myself.) I was also gone, to Tennessee, along with the youngest two boys. So Jen didn't get as many outfits made as we'd hoped. But she did watch some of the videos while I was gone.
We actually purchased several "fat quarters" for her to use. She had fun choosing the material!

Here is her first article of clothing: the crop top. Or, it could be turned around, and used as a vest!
I think Jen's first attempt turned out well, don't you? (Okay; I'll admit: I did help some, mainly just sewing the curved parts, like the neck and sleeve portions, but she did the rest!) I think the sewing machine is going to become a near-permanent fixture on the dining room table...in spite of what the males in the household might think about it! ;-)

With more practice, maybe Jen could even start making doll clothes for Christmas gifts, or as a way to raise some money. (She'd really like to get Molly, before she is retired forever).

I enjoy watching the videos, myself, and learning more sewing tips and tricks. I like the way Rosie starts the course out with the very basic stuff, which is especially helpful to beginners, like Jen. There are also things for a more experienced person, like me, to learn.

I'm not sure if there is a specified age range, but it seems suitable for all ages, in my opinion.  So, if you have little girls, age 8 and up, who are interested in learning to sew, I imagine this would be great. There might even be some boys who want to learn to sew, as well! Little Bit seemed especially intrigued while Sis was sewing! ;-)

And, hey! we love to listen to that Aussie accent! Yes, notice, my Aussie friends: she is from your country!

Be sure to read the rest of the Crew reviews, to see how my Crew mates used this course in their homes.
