Teaching Creatively--Schooling in the Kitchen

We spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so naturally a lot of schooling and learning take place here.

While we are working in the kitchen, we are learning: math (measuring), nutrition, health, following directions, and, hey! I am even trying (very hard) to teach them how to clean up after themselves. Yeah, that one doesn't always work so well!

Jen also has had to learn how to keep track of her carb intake, so she can calculate how much insulin she needs to take.
Cookie making is always fun!

To be honest, I tend to teach my children how to cook vegetarian; my goal is vegan, though.

1 or 2 15 oz. cans of sliced peaches, drained and diced
½ cup chopped dates
2 cups old fashioned, rolled oats
¼ cup grated coconut
1 ½ cups soy or almond milk
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla

Layer peaches, dates, oats, then coconut in 8” x 8” baking dish. Mix salt and vanilla in the milk, then pour over the oats, etc., making sure oats are evenly covered. Bake at 375F for 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. YIELDS: 3-4 servings.

Because we use Five in a Row, and have for several years now, time in the kitchen is usually a part of our week, since we use the cookbook as well. Sometimes I have to alter the menu by substituting with a vegetarian alternative, but that isn't usually very hard to do.

Be sure to come back tomorrow, when we'll talk about using games, puzzles, and toys in our home school.

  1. We canned applesauce a couple of years ago and my kid's always beg me to do it again! It looks like you have a lot of fun in the kitchen.
