TOS Review: Maestro Classics, Swan Lake

Do you have a desire to incorporate the study of classical music/music appreciation in your homeschool? Here is a fun, appealing way to do just that!

Maestro Classics produces Stories in Music, which is a classical music CD series for children ages 5 to 12,  and their parents, (but I think Teen Girl enjoyed it as well). This series of works for narrator and symphony orchestra features performances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and child-friendly, fun-filled stories and musical explanations.

Maestro Classics believes that listening to music together is a critical part of a joyous family life. They’ve outlined a few suggestions for introducing your children to all genres of music. They also have a Homeschool Music Curriculum Guide for each album.

The album we received was The Story of Swan Lake. From the website:

The Story of Swan Lake, Tchaikovsky’s greatest ballet score, is the tale of a prince who falls in love with a beautiful princess. The princess, however, has been turned into a swan by an evil magician, and only the prince’s love can break the spell. This narrated version of the classic tale for children is sure to delight all who love ballet and enchanting storytelling.

A 24-page activity book included with the CD contains a biography of Tchaikovsky, information on acoustic and electric guitars, sheet music and words for a sing-along song, explanation of major and minor keys, puzzles and more. MP3 download from Maestro Classics website includes a PDF of the activity booklet.
You can listen to samples of each track here.

We enjoyed listening to The Story of Swan Lake on several occasions: while eating breakfast, or cleaning up the kitchen afterward, or preparing lunch, etc. It is a great way to enhance our studies in music appreciation and composer studies! I'll have to admit, I wasn't that crazy about the Speed Metal Swan segment, myself!

Other titles include:
  • Peter and the Wolf
  • The Soldier’s Tale
  • Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
  • My Name is Handel: The Story of Water Music
  • The Tortoise and the Hare
  • Casey at the Bat
  • The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
  • Juanita the Spanish Lobster

I'd like to check out Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel; I think my boys would really like it! Each CD costs $16.98. They also have mp3 downloads of each album, costing $9.98.
