TOS Review: Apologia's How to Have a H.E.A.R.T. for Your Kids

We are kicking off our new review year with this incredible little book. It is power-packed, and thought provoking, and full of encouragement for any mom.

Author Rachael Carmen is a homeschooling mom of seven. She and her husband are owners of Apologia. She tells of her parenting journey, and God's workings in her heart.

How well do you really know your kids? What has God shown you about who they are and who they will become? He has sent these children into your home at this specific time for His glorious purposes. Indeed, you have been invited on the adventure of a lifetime, a journey on which you will see walls fall, seas parted, and giants slain. You don't need special skills or training for this journey—you need only to seek God and hold tight to His mighty hand! As with so many things, the first step to having a heart for your children is knowing your heavenly Father. As you seek daily to share His heart for your children, keep this inspirational book close at hand.

In this book you will learn how to have a heart for your children, based on the acrostic:
  • H-Have a Heart for the Things of God
  • E-Enrich Your Marriage
  • A-Accept Your Kids
  • R-Release Them to God
  • T-Teach Them the Truth

There's a chapter for each of the letters and topic associated with that letter, as well as an introduction and an epilogue. At the end of each chapter is a "heart-checkup," questions relating to the lessons in that chapter.

Mrs. Carmen writes from her personal experiences in such a way that it makes it very easy for the reader to relate. God really spoke to my heart throughout the book, and I was moved to tears on more than one occasion. The hardest thing for me to do has always been the "releasing them to God"! I don't know why, really, because I know He loves them far more than I do! Why can't I just trust them to Him? This book has helped me determine to make greater strides in that direction.

Parents, our children grow up so quickly! We have so little time, really, to teach them of the things that really matter, namely, how to have a deep, genuine relationship with the Lord. Take the time, while they are young, because when they are older (teens/young adults) it is hard to "redeem" that lost time.

You can purchase How to Have a H.E.A.R.T. for Your Kids through Apologia Press. You can see the table of contents, and even read a sample chapter. The cost for this lovely little hardbound book is $13.00.

  1. All of my children are young (10 and younger), but I know I will have difficulty "releasing them to God" as well. In the midst of our busyness, I need to remember how quickly this time is passing and make the most of it. Thanks for the reminder!
