We learned the story of young George Washington "cutting down the cherry tree" and made a cherry pie to go along with the story. There were virtual tours, which we found fascinating. We learned where George Washington lived, what is the only state named after a president, and that President Washington kept a journal.
Near the end of our study, I asked the boys to tell me everything they remembered about George Washington. Little Bit's response was: I don't know............
Botany Boy's response:
- He was a farmer
- He was a general
- He was a surveyor
- He was our first president
- He married someone named Martha
- He had a son name Jack
- He had a daughter, I don’t remember her name
- He lived in Mt. Rushmore
- When he was 11 years old, his father gave him a hatchet
Well, he didn't do too badly!! As soon as he said that President Washington lived in Mt. Rushmore, he realized his mistake, and we all had a good belly laugh over that! ;-) And I had to point out to him that young George wasn't 11 when he got the hatchet, but much younger than that.
