What comes to mind when you think of winter? Snow? Icicles? Snowmen? Snowshoes? Alpine skiing? Sledding? Animals hibernating? Birds at the bird feeder?
We have had a fun week learning more about winter; winter activities; some of the arctic animals; hot chocolate and s'mores. We used Winter Wonders to study this season.
Winter Wonders is a Download N Go unit study, especially designed for grades K-4. It's a 5 day study, filled with worksheets, lapbook components, hands on activities, links to internet information and video clips, as well as winter craft and recipe ideas. As with the other season DNGs, a daily nature walk is suggested, too.
The daily objectives covered in Winter Wonders are:
Day 1: What is Winter?
Day 2: Science Secrets of Winter
Day 3: People and Places of Winter
Day 4: Time for Tips and Treasures of Winter
Day 5: Goodies and Gadgets of Winter
Here in southwest Mississippi, you can imagine we really don't have much of a winter; not like we used to have in Montana, anyway! In fact, several of the days during this past week, we had temperatures climbing into the 60s! But this evening, as I type this review, we have an icy rain falling, and may awaken to ice in the morning.
We enjoyed watching the snow falling, birds feeding at feeders in the snow, dog sledding, and other winter activities in the video clips that are linked from this unit. We also enjoyed personally watching the bird activity around our own feeders.
Some of the books we had on hand to read:

Birds at our feeders:
And huddled on my window ledge...
We also enjoyed some S'mores!
We enjoyed learning about a new (to me) artist: Robert Duncan. One of his pictures that I really like is: Robert Duncan Limited Edition Print: "The Ski Team" - Robert Duncan Prints. My reason for liking this piece is, when I was a child, we had a Burnese Mountain Dog, and they have been a family favorite ever since!
We also learned about Balto, the race to get serum from Anchorage to Nome, and the Iditarod Dogsled Race which takes place each March. Dogsledding has always held a special attraction for me, since my folks and my grandparents raised Siberian Huskies a few decades ago. It is lovely to ride in that sled behind a team of beautiful dogs, in the light of a full moon!
I am sure you will enjoy Winter Wonders as much as we did!
Winter Wonders can be purchased for $7.95.....but if you hurry within the next few hours, you can get it for $4.00. But that special lasts only until midnight, Mountain Time, tonight (1/9/11). So, HURRY!!
