DNG Review: Ben Franklin

What comes to mind when you hear the name, Benjamin Franklin? Electricity? Inventor? Printer? Poor Richard's Almanac? Do you know how many siblings Ben had? Do you know what he wanted to be when he grew up?

The current Download N Go we are doing is Ben Franklin. (I wanted to post our review before we have actually completed the whole unit, because this unit is currently on sale!!). We are having fun learning more about Benjamin Franklin, especially my 10 year old, since history is his favorite subject!

We're learning about Ben's family, trade signs, almanacs, Founding Fathers, inventions and the Declaration of Independence. One thing that will be exciting for the 10 year old, is when he learns there was a tree named after Franklin! I know he will want one growing in our yard!

Download N Go units are written for K-4th grade level. They can be adapted to upper grade levels as well. They are full of weblinks, to videos and photos, and all kinds of information on the internet. There are also notebooking pages, and lapbooking elements in each unit. We tend to do a combination notebook/lapbook, using pocket folders.

This unit's daily objectives are:

Day 1: Who Was Ben Franklin?
Day 2: People and Places in Ben Franklin’s Life
Day 3: The Accomplishments of Ben Franklin
Day 4: Lessons to Learn From Ben Franklin
Day 5: Remembering Ben Franklin

For this unit, I chose to print off only one set of notebook pages, which I am filling out while the boys dictate their answers. But they each have the lapbook elements to cut out and fill in. There are also some pages on which to draw pictures, which I am having them each fill in, too. I even chose not to pick up any of the books at the library from the list of suggested books. So we truly just grabbed and went with this one! ;-)

The usual price of each Download N Go unit sells for $7.95, but from now until November 22, Ben Franklin is on sale for $6.25.
