Homeschooling With Style

This week's Blog Cruise question is: What is your homeschooling style, and how did you choose for your family?

I guess I must first admit, I am still trying to figure this one out! ;)

When we first stated homeschooling my oldest, in Kindergarten, I ordered a curriculum package, but we soon found the textbook/workbook wasn't the right "fit" for us.

My mother, a retired church school teacher, gave me a lot of her resources when she retired. One of the items was a small school curriculum to which she had contributed. We used that for the next couple years, each month learning about different people who were born in that month, different holidays, and other themes. Using theme or unit studies was much more our style.

Then we discovered Five in a Row. It was such a perfect fit for us! We found we enjoyed using unit studies based on quality literature, which incorporate all or most subjects into one study. Five in a Row uses exceptional picture books. Each book is read for five days in a row, with each day focusing on a different subject, such as: Mondays-Social Studies; Tuesdays-Language Arts; Wednesday-Art; Thursday-Science; and Friday-Applied Math.

Even now, after 13 years of homeschooling, we still find we prefer the unit study/theme approach. I also tend to lean toward delayed formal education, delight directed, perhaps even a bit relaxed. We enjoy reading books, and watching videos relating to what we are studying.
