TOS Review: Growing Healthy Homes, Nutrition 101

One of the things I have wanted us to focus on more in our home school, and in our family, daily life in general, is health. We already focus frequently on health, anyway, since Teen Girl has Type 1 Diabetes; still, the rest of us in the family need more attention in this area, ourselves.

When I received an electronic copy of Nutrition 101: Choose Life to use and review, I was very pleased! There are nearly 450 pages to this book!! I've heard that the print volume is beautiful; I can imagine, since, from seeing the electronic form, I know it is full of colorful illustrations and photos.

Nutrition 101: Choose Life is divided into 6 units; each unit contains 4 chapters. It "is a three-in-one family nutrition and health program for all ages that presents the major body systems, how they function, their common health issues, the benefits of good food and the consequences of bad food." Unit topics covered are:

The Brain and Nervous System
Digestion and Elimination
Respiration and Olfactory
Muscular and Skeletal Systems
Cardiovascular and Immune Systems
Endocrine System and Emotions

It teaches why we eat what should eat, and not just because Mom says so. The book contains hands-on activities, science and art projects, and close to 80 recipes to try out. You'll find a reference guide filled with nutrition facts, charts, practical tips and a fairly complete index. You can see a sample of the pages here.

For the purposes of this review, we pretty much skimmed through, while focusing mainly on unit 6: the endocrine system, since it includes a chapter devoted to diabetes. So the recipes we tried out were from this unit: Ultimate Pizza; Brussel Sprouts with Lemon Pepper Dressing; Veggie Linguine with Fresh Tomato Sauce; and Tropical Vanilla Ice Cream Shake.

Teen Girl, who isn't that crazy about homemade pizza, said it was the best homemade pizza ever, and says we have to use this recipe from now on whenever we make our own pizza! Botanist Boy said it was the best pizza ever, and Little Bit agreed.

We definitely look forward to trying more recipes. The various recipes are absolutely being printed off for our recipe collection.

Since we were already planning to study human anatomy and physiology next year (Teen Girl's senior year for high school!), we'll plan to study this more in depth then. I am sure it will be used as a reference for many more years to come, as well.
