TOS Review: Creek Edge Press

Does your homeschooling style include Charlotte Mason, Classical, or Montessori methods? Creek Edge Press has developed sets of task cards that will appeal especially to homeschoolers who use any of these methods!

The Task Card Sets are non-consumable and are designed for use by multiple grades. Specific books are not indicated in the tasks, making them easy to customize for use within your home.

The author, Amy Kate Hilsman, homeschooling mother of 5, began designing these Task Cards when her oldest was in first grade. She has used this Task Card Approach with her children over the past 10 years. You can read more of her story at the Creek Edge Press site.

There are several topics of Task Card sets:

  • Science
  • History, Geography, and Culture
  • Art
  • Music
  • Grammar Reinforcement
They are designed for grades K-8 (actually, the art and music sets will accommodate grades K-12), and encourage independent learning. Your child could basically work on 1 card per week.

We received the Medieval World Task Card set. This set includes a Course Introduction booklet, and a set of 33 cards. Tasks cover the Fall of Rome through the Reformation and Renaissance. Your students will investigate and explore civilizations and history through engaged learning designed to introduce and reinforce key content related to the Medieval World.

Instruction guide and task cards

The cards are arranged chronologically and topically. The tasks direct students toward standard key content. You will want to find resource items, to have on hand, for your student to utilize: history encyclopedia; atlas; encyclopedia set; reference books; various living books, biographies, etc. Book lists and supporting links can be found on the website.

Some of the tasks your student will complete:
  • Encyclopedia Research
  • Further Reading
  • Map work
  • Timeline
  • Biographical summaries
  • Collages

Frankly, I like these Task Cards! I like having checklists! I can see us using them more in the future. It took me a bit of time to gather some of the recommended resources, like history encyclopedias, some of the biographies and other references sources. I am thankful to already have atlas and globe, etc. Some of the resources I couldn't find at our local library, so I went ahead and purchased online, particularly the history encyclopedias.

The boys have especially enjoyed the mapwork activities, and recording events on our timelines.

Prices range from $18.00-$20.00 per set, or $32.00-$90.00 per subject set. Currently there is a MidWinter Sale, free domestic shipping on orders of $36.00 or more, using coupon code: MidWinter.
