Do you have a young, emergent reader anxious to have chapter books of his/her own to read? One who loves historical adventures? A young child who is "crazy" about horses? Here is a sweet set of easy-to-read chapter books about a young girl growing up on a ranch in California in the mid-1870's.
Recently we were given Andi's Fair Surprise, the third book in the Circle C Beginnings series, to read and review. Frankly, I had Teen Girl (17) read it, as well as Botanist Boy (11), and I read it aloud to Little Bit (8) who is not yet reading on his own (due to his developmental delays). I must say, we all enjoyed the story! I foresee us purchasing the rest of the books in the series, too...perhaps for Little Bit's birthday next month!
Andi's Fair Surprise finds us on the way to the California State Fair in 1874, with Andi wanting to win a ribbon, or anything, just like the rest of the family. But she is told that, at age 6, she is too young to enter her foal, who is also too young. But then the prize she does win, she is not allowed to keep!
On the author's website, there are also coloring pages, activity packs, puzzles, and even lapbooks! These were fun to work on. The coloring pages are illustrations from the book, which are very sweet sketches.
Currently there are four books of the series in print, with two more expected to be released in August, 2011. They are written at the second grade reading level. Each book is priced at $4.99 (plus shipping); or you can purchase all 4 for $15.96 (plus shipping). If you order through the author's website, you can choose to have the books personalized and autographed by Susan K. Marlow. They can also be purchased through Amazon, Christian Book Distributors, and Kregal Publications.
The author, Susan K. Marlow, also has a series of books, Circle C Adventures, for older readers (9-14), about Andi, and her horse, Taffy, when they are a few years older. I believe they have now been placed on our "wish list," too!
It was fun to learn about a new (to us) author, and discover more good, Christian literature. Be sure to check them out for yourself, and let us know what you think!

Hi Wendy,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the sweet review of Fair Surprise. Even your Teen Girl liked it, eh? (Actually, I like kids' literature better sometimes than adult lit, so I understand). It's been a fast and fun ride, getting all six books out in ONE YEAR, plus all the activities.
Thanks again!
Susan
Thanks, Ms. Susan, for visiting and commenting on my review!....In my early 20's I took a correspondence course from The Institute of Children's Literature...and have LOVED children's literature ever since. Then when I was working on my Bachelor's in Graphic Design, I "designed" a fictitious book cover for a fictitious author....So I have an idea of how much work goes into making books! ;-) Our favorite homeschool curriculum is Five in a Row....which is FULL of wonderful children's literature!!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
