Memoir Monday--Week 25

What activities did your parents have you participate in as a pre-teen/tween (sports, clubs, church)? What were your favorites? What would you have preferred not to do?

The only thing I recall was a club through our church, called Pathfinders, which is somewhat like Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts combined, with a little 4-H type activities thrown in there, too. For the most part, I really enjoyed it.

Oh, yes, I also took piano lessons a few years. I did not enjoy that, especially when it came time to prepare for recital. Just thinking about getting up front for such a thing....I was just too shy to manage it, so quit taking piano lessons. Now I wish I had continued, so I would know how to play, and could play for church or something.

What activities did you choose to participate in as a teenager? Did they help you when it came to choosing a career or preparing for college?

I continued in Pathfinders through my 9th grade year. Then, of course I went away to academy/boarding school, so there were a few activities in which to participate. There were no sports, though.

We had outdoor recreation: darebase; capture the flag; various games like that. There were Sabbath afternoon hikes each week. We also had community service opportunities in which we could participate. I was also in the choir. Of course, this school also has a vocational program, in which all students participate. By the time I graduated, I was a certified nurse's aide.

The vocational program greatly helps in preparing for college, or a career.

  1. Wendy,

I really like the idea of a vocational program. Not only do students have the opportunity to "test drive" and occupation, but they come away with the knowledge they have ability in a vocation. This has got to be a plus for school.

Piano - I wish I had had lessons. I was in band and played Sax - I forgot about that! :-)
