DNG Review: Magnificent Moon/Moon Map Giveaway

I don't know about you, but I think one of the most glorious things is a full moon. There is something almost magical about a stroll in the moonlight. It's a pleasure I've enjoyed since my high school days.

The past few days Little Bit and I have been learning about our Magnificent Moon, using an exciting Download N Go unit.

Magnificent Moon is a 5 day unit study (specifically designed for grades K-4), and is full of fun facts about the moon, space, astronomy, and introduces us to the astronauts who were privileged to walk on the moon. Some of the video clips included with this unit are from the actual coverages of when these astronauts walked on the moon (waaaaay back when I was a child! ;-) ). Little Bit was amazed that I was younger than he is, when Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon, and that I remembered watching it on TV.

The daily objectives for Magnificent Moon are:

Day 1: What Exactly Is a Moon?
Day 2: Getting to Know the Moon
Day 3: The Story of the Moon
Day 4: Science Secrets of the Moon
Day 5: Cool Things About the Moon

We've enjoyed getting acquainted with a new astronaut each day. It was especially fascinating to meet Alan Bean, and learn about his artwork, and how he creates his pieces. His paintings have texture; he uses tools and various items he had with him in space. The base of each of his paintings contains small pieces of his space suit, the command module, and even particles of moondust. Each painting portrays an actual event of the astronauts' experiences on the moon.

We have also enjoyed the lapbook elements and notebooking pages in this unit! They help reinforce what we've learned. There are also fascinating science experiments suggested. Little Bit can't wait to show them to his older brothers!

Some of the books we read with this unit are: When You Look Up at the Moon; Owl Moon; Goodnight, Moon; Floating in Space; The Moon Book; If You Decide to Go to the Moon; and The Moon (by Robert Louis Stevenson).

Little Bit found it fascinating to observe the phase of the moon each night. Actually, he noticed it this morning, shortly after we woke up.

We are sure you will enjoy Magnificent Moon as much as we have!

Magnificent Moon can be purchased for $7.95. Currently, though, it is available as part of the Cabin Fever Fun Pack, which also includes Winter Wonders, Expedition Canada, and Hoppin' Popcorn, and costs $20.00. This special ends January 31, 2011.

Also taking place right now is a giveaway contest for 2 standard Moon Maps from National Geographic, valued at $16.99 each. This contest runs from January 24-28; the drawing will take place January 28, 2011, at 9:00, pm. Be sure to enter here, and leave a comment on my blog, telling me you entered. (Sorry, if you're on the DNG review team, you're ineligible)
