TOS Review: Ooka Island

Ooka Island Inc. is an educational company that offers online, independent, reading curriculum for children in Pre-K to 2ndGrade. Ooka Island is for the 21st Century early learner on both the PC and Mac and effectively combines entertaining gaming theory with scientifically proven reading methods.

During part of the course, your child "follows" the robot guide, Zobot. He guides your child through various activities, for a period of time, then your child is taken to the Popcorn Library, to read books. After the lessons are completed, then your child has free time, and Zobot "follows" him!

Here's an overview of the program:

Some of the games, with the concepts covered:

• Alphabet Mountain: identifying and sequencing lower and upper case letters
• Bubbly Trubbly: letter-sound correspondence
• Cake Factory: letter-sound correspondence; segmenting, blending, decoding
• Submarine Listening: Identifying vowels in initial, medial and final positions
• Word Ball: Auditory discrimination between syllables and words; decoding

I will admit, this is a very large download (2 GB). You will want to read the system requirements on the FAQ page, before downloading, to be sure your computer is compatible.

My second grader was my tester for this, and he's been having so much fun! Every morning, almost before morning chores and family worship time are completed, he's asking to do his schoolwork on the computer! I like that he can do this independently, without my needing to sit right beside him to read to him.
