TOS Review: Pearson Education--1st Grade Social Studies

Pearson Education is the world's leading educational publishing company. They produce quality textbooks and educational materials. Some of Pearson's brands include Scott Foresman, Prentice Hall, and Addison Wesley.

Recently, various members of the TOS Crew were given the opportunity to check out some of the student books published by Pearson Education: enVision Math, grade 1; All Together Social Studies, grade 1; and Reading Street, grade 2. We received All Together Social Studies in our home, for Little Bit to try out.

I'll admit, we aren't real big on textbooks in our home school. But this book is wonderfully colorful. It has a sturdy hardbound cover. It will make a great reference book, in which we can look up information to enhance any unit study on which we may be working.

The book is divided into six units:

Unit 1-Time for School
Unit 2-In My Community
Unit 3-Work! Work! Work!
Unit 4-Our Earth, Our Resources
Unit 5-This is Our Country
Unit 6-Our Country, Our World

Each unit contains various components, such as:
  • Begin with a song

  • Vocabulary preview

  • Reading Social Studies

  • Biographies

  • Citizen Heroes

  • Chart and Graph Skills

  • Thinking Skills

  • Then and Now

  • End with a poem

It is obviously a textbook, with a formal classroom setting in mind, considering the first unit focuses on school, and the classroom. For this reason, it might make it a bit of a challenge for a homeschooling family to use, but I suppose you could skip, or skim, that first unit like we did.

This resource could also be useful, if you want something short to read with your child while sitting in the waiting room (for medical appointments, or therapy appointments, etc.). Seriously, the pictures are very colorful and engaging.

You can watch a video that explains how a teacher could use this resource, and other items that go with it. You can see what other items are available for this social studies text, too. This page indicates, though, you need a purchasing order or school credit card in order to purchase using this form. The student text is $43.47.

  1. Hey Wendy,

Stopping by from the crew. I reviewed Social Studies, too. It's definitely a nice supplement to our other curriculum.

I believe I am your latest follower on GFC. It's about time - yes? =)

    Blessings to you and yours,
