We admittedly use quite a few videos in our schooling. My oldest especially seemed to learn the most by watching videos, or programs on educational channels, such as Discovery, History, Science, Military, even the Weather Channel!I was pretty excited to learn about the z-guides to the Movies, by Zeezok Publishing. Teen Girl has been working on one for the movie, One Night with the King. It is a brand new z-guide!
Each zguide contains a topic overview, a movie synopsis, and ten learning activities which provide an in-depth study of the film. They are available in CD or ebook format, for $12.99 each. You may also purchase the video for each zguide on their site. Most zguides are designed for junior high/high school level.
We chose to review One Night With the King because the story of Queen Esther is one of my favorite Bible stories. She was a courageous young woman! The movie is only somewhat loosely based on the actual account as found in the Bible, of course, but still enjoyable to watch.
Some of the activities included in One Night With the King:
- Movie review questions
- More about the Persian Empire
- Letter protesting Haman’s plan to kill the Jews
- Man looks on the outward appearance
- Worldview activity
- Word search
- The filmmaker’s art
- For family discussion
Teen Girl watched the video, (which we were able to check out from the library) more than once. While she watched it, she answered the review questions. At the beginning of the guide, it has a five-day lesson plan already organized, dividing the 10 activities, 2 per day. We actually spread it out longer, though.She also did some online research about ancient Persian history and ancient Jewish history. Other topics we learned about were loyalty, results of excessive pride and desire for revenge, and God’s providence.
Currently there are around 25 titles available, some of which are:
- A Man for All Seasons
- Amazing Grace
- Ben Hur
- Flyboys
- Kit Kittredge (elementary level)
- The Hiding Place
- The Red Badge of Courage
I am sure you will be pleased to add these to your studies of the various time periods of history. We are definitely looking forward to using more of them in the future!
