TOS Review: See-N-Read Reading Tools

I was recently blessed with the opportunity to use and review See-N-Read reading tools. It was exciting to receive these products, since some of my children struggle a bit with reading, and sometimes with keeping their columns lined up properly in math!

These handy tools are are made from polyethylene terephthalate, commonly abbreviated PET; also known as polyester. They are shaded gray, with a clear box through which you are able to read the line of text in the document you may be reading.

I was provided with two See-N-Read tools, which come in two sizes:

Book size: 5 1/2" x 3"
Document size: 8 1/2" x 3"

I was also provided with one Memory Mark, which come in the same two sizes as the See-N-Read. We received the book size.

These are just like the See-N-Read, except the clear window is cut out, so you can use it for marking or highlighting what you're reading. Or, you can place it vertically on the math page, so the student can keep his/her columns lined up properly!

The other product I was provided with was a review copy of the eSee-N-Read. The eSee-N-Read offers all of the benefits of the See-N-Read, right on the computer. It is possible to modify the size, shape and depth of color to suit your needs. It also is possible to use it with a PC-driven projector or interactive whiteboard.

The purpose of this product, as from the website:

See-N-Read® is a practical reading intervention tool....designed to help readers seamlessly see, focus, and remember what they read. It reduces word- and line-skipping and pattern glare.

See: See-N-Read® helps readers to concentrate on and track the text being read while smoothly transitioning between the words that come before or after, thus helping readers to increase their fluency (the capacity to read text accurately and quickly) and comprehension.

Focus: See-N-Read’s clear reading window is surrounded by a non-glare tinted transparent finish that helps readers to focus on manageable “chunks” of information in each line of text.

Remember: See-N-Read® provides readers with a clear reference point that helps control smooth eye movements across the text on a page. Smooth eye movement from left to right and smooth transitions from line to line ("sweeping") enhance retention of information.

Two of my children have been using them; my youngest is not reading quite yet, but still likes to use it as he "pretends" to read.

My daughter says she likes it okay, but feels she reads faster without it. Perhaps I ought to let her use the Memory Mark more, while highlighting her science text, or in her Bible reading!

My 11 year old, who has mentioned in the past that the words and letters seem to move on the page, seems to benefit the most from the See-N-Read since it helps him focus more on the line he is reading. He did tell me he prefers to read without it, running his finger under the text, instead. I think it may be mostly because he just can't be bothered with having to remember to move the See-N-Read as he goes! ;-)

You can read some testimonials on the website, as well as the story of how these tools came to be, and the research behind them.

The See-N-Read comes in a single pack, 3-pack, 10-pack, or 25-pack; with prices ranging from $2.99 for the single pack book size, to $69.99 for the 25-pack document size. There are also combination packs: one each of the book size and document size, for $5.99; or three of each, for $17.99.

The Memory Mark prices run the same as for the See-N-Read.

The eSee-N-Read electronic reading and instruction tool costs $29.99.
