Bronner: A Journey to Understand, by Sherri Burgess {a book review}

About the book

God teaches and refines us through pain and suffering. Author Sherri Burgess, wife of Rick Burgess of The Rick and Bubba Show, knows this to be true. After the earthly death of her youngest son, Bronner, Burgess asked, “Why?” And God answered.

Journey with her through this powerful testimony of healing to understand the purpose behind the pain. An empowering resource for book-club discussion or small-group Bible study, this is much more than simply a retelling of an inspiring story. It is a call to action beckoning us to know our Holy God like never before.

What I thought about the book

Because I have gone through pain and suffering in my life (certainly not the death of a child, for which I am extremely thankful), I looked forward to reading this book, to glean encouragement from the testimony presented therein.

I know that what I am about to say/write will not be popular at all. I mean no offense, though.

Frankly, I struggled to find the intended encouragement, because I had a hard time getting past the "he's in heaven now" concept. You see, I haven't found any Biblical support of that idea.

With that in mind, I want to mention: if you believe what the Bible says about death in the following verses, you also may have a problem with this book.

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. Ecclesiates 9:5,6

For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? Psalm 6:5

The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go down into silence. Psalm 115:17

Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. Psalm 146:3,4

As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more. Job 7:9,10

Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb. Job 21:32

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. John 5:28,29

Be sure to also read John 20, especially verse 17: Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
